This is a marriage of two casks and I imagine individually the casks were not that great - the refill cask was probably dominated by this overpowering ashy note and the first fill sherry cask may have been a bit dirty and too sherry forward - together each would soften the others overly intense notes to create a more balanced and enjoyable dram
